Lesson 8: Online Advertising Business

Today "Google Adsense" is one of the hottest topics discussed around the (internet) world. Most of you might know that it is something to do with advertisements. But what really is 'Adsense'? Before we discuss about Adsense, let us understand the business of advertising online.

On-line Advertisements

Just open any of the search engines (google, msn, yahoo, etc.) and search for some information. Open the websites listed in the result and check if there are advertisements displayed on them.

You will be surprised to see that 8 out of 10 websites would display advertisements through google or msn or yahoo or other similar service providers or directly from the advertisers. The reason is very simple - the advertising business is lucrative!

The Internet reaches millions of people who seek information everyday. People are searching the Internet for information of their interest. Unlike any other media, the online advertisements are displayed precisely based on the keywords that people search for.

Google Adsense and Others

If you had visited Google website and searched for some information you might have noticed some links on the right-hand side and on top of the page. Those are called 'Text Links' that are relevant to the information you are searching for. Those links are the advertisements, run by a program called 'Google Adwords'.

Often people are confused about 'Adsense' and 'Adwords'. Google displays advertisements through Adwords program and charges the advertisers on 'per-click' or on 'number of impressions' basis. While their Adsense program allows the publishers (who provide information through their websites) to display relevant advertisements and pay them a partial amount on the same basis.

Though Google were the pioneers for this concept, today there are many other websites (including MSN and Yahoo) that offer such program. You may search MSN/Yahoo/Google for the companies that provide such services.

The basic concept remains the same with all the service providers. However, the method of approval, the terms, the advertising charges, the commission, etc. may differ.

Registering with Adsense or Others

We'll look at the registering process of 'Google Adsense'. The process is almost the same with all the other service providers.

To register with Google for "Adsense" you need to have a website or a blog that provides valuable information (on any subject). The website (or blog) must be completely ready without any broken links (i.e. the links that take you nowhere). Only when your website is completely ready, you should apply to Google.

Once you submit your application, one of their representatives will personally check your website and will approve or reject, based on the contents of your website. The whole process of registration may take a week or two.

Note: If you check many websites with adsense ads, you will realize that aesthetics of a website is not important! Usually Google is concerned with legal aspects, quality of your contents and whether your website complies with their terms of service.

Once you are approved (affiliated to Google), they will provide you with HTML codes that you will copy and paste it on your website. When someone opens your website, Google ads appear on your website, relevant to the content. If your visitors click on any of the ad links, the Google charges the advertiser (through their Adwords service) and they share part of that revenue with you (through their affiliate program called 'Adsense').

You will generate handsome income, if you have good traffic to your website.

The Secret

Due to popularity of adsense, thousands of websites have mushroomed with variety of products like "Secrets of Google Adsense uncovered" and are being sold for an amount between US $10 and $197.

But the fact is 'there is no such secret exists that needs to be uncovered'. If you want to make good amount of money with Google Adsense, you need to get thousands of visitors per day to your web site. If you do not have sufficient visitors to click on the ads on your webpage, it is obvious that you are not going to generate any income through 'Adsense'.

The only secret (if there is any) is all clicks do not fetch the same money. So it is important to closely watch and study the current trend. If you know the profitable keywords, you can optimize your website accordingly and generate a decent income from Adsense. Some keywords are sold for high price, due to heavy competition and more number of searches per day. The low priced keywords are less competitive and less number of searches per day. It is quiet natural that Google will pay you based on the income they generate.

If you want to make good profit, you must first understand the 'profit making' keywords and then generate good traffic to your website. These are the real secrets involved in making money with Adsense and nothing more. Soon you will learn various methods to generate traffic to your website.

Conclusion: Costly keywords will fetch you more money, however you need to work hard to generate traffic (due to competition). As a beginner it is recommended that you must focus on generating more traffic (SEO), rather than working on costly keywords.

• Lowest marketing cost compared to other methods. You will promote your website using search engine optimization and other cost-effective methods.
• This is the slowest method to earn money online, as it takes lot of time to bring traffic using SEO and cost-effective methods.
• This is a fragile business. If you do not follow their instructions carefully, you might get banned forever and will never get a chance to apply again.
