Internet Marketing v/s Online Business (or Internet Business)
Before you really get into the subject, it is important to understand the terms 'internet marketing' and 'online business'.
Online Business (also known as internet business), is the process of earning money exclusively through internet. It may involve sale of digital products or providing services or various other activities. Usually, online business is promoted only through internet marketing.
You can run an online business with or without a product. That means you can promote others' product and earn commission. Or you can earn through other means like advertising on your website or on a free blog. Or you can use your own imagination and combine many methods together and create a great business. The opportunities are almost endless.
Internet Marketing, is the process of promoting a business through the internet, using computer technology like hardware, software and tele-communication. Using internet marketing techniques, you can promote any kind of business, i.e. conventional type like selling of tangible products or an online business. You can sell practically anything on the internet and selling process may involve a website or may not.
Misconception about Online Business
Many people think that online business means 'earning money through internet, by any means'. Online business is NOT getting paid for certain action (like data entry, online surveys, clicking on ads, etc.). Those are basically jobs. Secondly, many such programs are unethical/illegal.
You must stay away from any business that does not involve a valid product and any job that does not involve a valid action (e.g. reading emails is not a valid action for which one should be paid for).
The Basic Concept
The internet was initially designed for sharing information within a small community. But over a period of time, the number of computers hooked on to the internet has grown drastically and the internet became much more useful than it was originally expected to be. Later on, people found ways and means to promote their business on the internet through computers.
Initially (end of 80's), the internet was used only as a media to market the products & services and to take orders. But the payments were collected and the products/services were delivered offline (i.e. physically using conventional methods).
Due to technological development in the field of communication today we can accept payments on the internet using credit cards and bank transfers. Such facilities are available in almost all the countries around the world. Once the buyer pays money online, the digital products like eBooks, Software Programs and online services like Hosting, Training, Membership, etc. are delivered automatically to the buyer through internet.
However, in case of tangible products and technical/professional services, even if the payment is collected online, the products can only be delivered through conventional means.
